Mingxin School in Pingshan District. Photos from Eastern Cultural
Before Mingxin School was established in 1927, teachers were invited by the Zeng family to the adjacent Dawan Ancestral Residence to educate local children. As the demand for education grew, the Zeng family built Mingxin School. Initially, it only accepted Zeng family children, but later it opened its doors to children from neighboring villages.
The school features a unique architectural style that blends traditional Hakka and Western influences. In 1952, it became a public institution and was renamed Dawan Primary School. By the 1980s, the school was repurposed as factory warehouses. After renovations in 2011, it was transformed into a community service center.
Today, the school operates as a vibrant public book room, offering spacious reading areas, selling creative products, and showcasing Hakka culture. It provides a serene environment for locals and book lovers and serves as a cultural hub with various exhibitions, events, and workshops.
